Comparisons with adjectives [not as...as/almost as...as]

Here's a sentence I made up.

English is not as objective as mathematics.

For objectivity, math > English. In math there are right answers and wrong answers that you can't argue with. It's more objective than English. English is much more subjective.
An acceptible answer in one class might be rejected in another.

Here's another.

Tim Duncan is almost as tall as Shaquille O'Neal.

Tim is 7'0" tall, but Shaq is 7'1". Therefore Shaq is taller than Tim.
For height, Tim < Shaq. You can say "almost" because the two statistics, or pieces of information being compared, are really close (only 1 inch off) without being even.

A is as + adjective + as B. Equality--A=B
A is not as + adjective + as B. A<B
A is almost as + adjective + as B. Not quite equal--A<B(just barely)

Britney spears is almost as pretty as her younger sister.

For pretty, Britney<her younger sister. (just barely) Britney closely

resembles her younger sister . Both Britney & her sister are pretty




My father is not as tall as brother.

For height, father<brother

My father is about 170centimeter tall,but brother is 180 centimeter.

Thus my brother taller than father. Almost 10centimeter tall difference

ex) John is as tall as Tim

2. A is not as+ ad+ as B A<B
ex) John is not as tall as Tim

3. A is almost as+ ad+as B Not quite equal A<B (Just barely)
ex) John is almost as tall as Tim


1-1 A comparison showing how two things are the same might contain as....as. To compare two similar items, you can use as...as to give an approximation. John 7'0" and Tim 7'0"

2-1 The negative form of as...as is often used instead of the comparative with less. Sometimes it maybe better to use not as...as instead of the comparative because not as...as is more indirect and polite.

3-1 Between two comparisons are almost equality but not exact equality John 7'0" and Tim 7'1"

Comments and Corrections

My girlfriend is a little more beautiful than Stacy.

Don't forget the basics here.

Her face was as red as a rose.

Don't use were with face.

My Sonata isn't as fast as a Porsche.

Be careful with your comparisons. Never use the comparative form of an adjective between as...as.

The Empire State Building isn't as tall as The Twin Petronas Towers.

Just correcting the names of the buildings for you.

NSYNC is almost as popular as The Backstreet Boys in Korea.

Same thing here--don't forget the article the on certain names.

Her hands are as cold as ice.

Hands is a plural noun in this sentence and takes are instead of is.

My father is not as tall as my brother.

Little mistake--don't omit my in front of brother here. We need to know whose brother you are comparing your father to.
