"Can" is often used to show abiltiy. Here's an example I just thought up:
Teacher: Can you come to my office at 2:00?
Student: Actually I can't. I have class then.
Teacher: OK. How about 4:00? Can you come then?
Student: Sure I can.

Sometimes I can't sleep because I can't stop thinking (usually about my classes or my websites).

Actually, the speaker probably believes that the two pencils do exist. S/he just doesn't know where they are. For example I know I have some business cards, but right now I can't find them.

I think it would be better to say:
My dreams can come true.
OR
I can make my dreams come true.

A: I'm heading downtown. Can I give you a lift?
B: The way you drive, I'd rather take the bus.

'give someone lift' means take a ride. 'Can I give you a lift?' means I can take a ride for you.

Morningstar is a famous financial company so they think people will trust them because of their reputation. That's why they say people can trust them.

Can vs. May for Permission

Postby Jason M. Ham » Sun Jul 18, 2004 4:55 pm

My father used to do this to me all of the time:
A: Dad, can I have some ice cream?
B: I don't know, can you?
A: You know what I mean. Is it OK? May I have some ice cream?
B: Yes, you may.

He was trying to get me to use may for permission and restrict can for use with ability only. Sorry, dad, it looks like everybody on the streets is ignoring your suggestion these days. :?

Permission:
Can I go to the movies with Brad? Please?

<or>
May I go ...

Ability:
Can you do a handstand?
