Battlefield Tourism (Battlefield Less Visited)

Postby (LOST) Jihan_Song » Sat Mar 17, 2012 12:41 am

In Korea, only a few people frequently visit the battlefield since there is no amusement and no excitement. Nobody get to the battlefields as many times as do they get to such places as a downtown area, a shopping center, an amusement park, and so on. It is natural, but there is something strange.
It is that people are too indifferent to the history of their country. Most Koreans visit those places once or twice in a lifetime. Men who served military service, for instance, have been to battlefields several times during the period of the service, but it is not a universal case to women. Calling a spade a spade, after the service they rarely visit there. Not a many people want to visit those historically landmarked places several times.
It, however, is so regrettable that the places get less visited as time goes by. I suppose that the major reason it happens is a lack of education of history. Ultimately they may be forgotten. To nip the possible matter in the bud, it is recommendable that government take the policy imposing duty which they should be educated in Korean history more intensively upon all the nation.

I agree with you. history education is very important.
however, I think the more important thing is our attitude for learning history.
most korean student learn korean history during their school days but history education has highly focused on test in school.
thus, most student tend to forget most parts of history they learn after the test.
I think we need to give motivation to students.
when students know the real reason why they have to learn history and why they are studying history, It would be more effective.

I agree with you. Just forcing the students to learn history cannot be the ultimate solution. As you said, "motivation" is very important. For this motivation, we need to think about teaching method. We can let the students to play some scenes from historical events or battles, or we can let them discuss historical soap operas or films. In my case, I came to love history because I regard this not as an examination subject but as just a story. Every time when I saw historical soap opera, I wanted to know the background of the story. That made me to learn history, but I never thought that I learn it, but enjoy it. I think we can motivate the students to have interest in history, if we find out better teaching method for history. Therefore we need to come up with proper teaching methods.

When it comes to the meaning of visiting to Battlefield, surely it fades away as time goes by. I think that this means the lack of interest in history. More we are not interested in it, more things that have historical meanings are neglected.
History means differently to each person. People who are interested in history find themselves their way to fill their curiousity of history, visiting the sites, reading books etc. To make more people interested in history, we should find effective ways to provoke. Like education, dramas, TV shows, exhibition, movies etc. And also I think we should encourage field or school trips visiting historical sites to students. Not only sight seeing the spots but also we should make some programms for them to enjoy and learn history like game, quize, and play. To make them participate in entertainments, we can also give them opportunities for them to learn history very naturally.
The mass media takes a great part in our lives. So using them to make people interested in history might be effective. But I think it would be more effective if we give them some chances to actually experience when they are young. Suggesting schools field trips or school trips to the historical sites is the answer.

I agree with your opinion that only a few people frequently visit the battlefield.
And I also agree with your opinion that this sorrow fact is caused by lack of education of history. Indeed, I think, our nation is negligent in history education now.
This can easily be found through to see the fact that national history is an optional subject. We can study from past failures and enhance patriotism by learning history. But such being the case, naturally indifference to history increased and so did indifference to the battlefield.
So it is high time to reconsider the importance of teaching history.
