If you want to have a web site, you're going to need a web host. In order to teach you a bit about web hosting, let's look at an advertisement for the company I use to host ESLgo.com:

PowWeb Hosting - $7.77/ month

Now let's see what the ad means:

2,000 MB web space refers to how much information you can store on your site. MB stands for megabyte, or 1,000,000 bytes. This web hosting class is about 10 KB (1 kilobyte = 1,000 bytes) so you could store about 200,000 of these web hosting class web pages on a site hosted by Powweb. 650 MB is about the same amount of information that could be stored on a CD-ROM.

5 gigs transfer/day refers to bandwidth, or how many people can look at your web pages. Every time someone looks at a web page, the server has to send information to that person's computer. The amount of information Powweb will send is 5 GB (GB stands for gigabyte and 1 GB = 1,024 MB) every day.

These are not shown in the ad, but Powweb also gives clients POP3/IMAP & SMTP. This refers to how many e-mail addresses you can have. For example, I could set up 650 ____@eslgo.com email addresses.

The ad says "zero downtime hosting" but Powweb guarantees 99.9% uptime. Uptime refers to how much of the time people can see your site. Occasionally servers have problems, and then when someone goes to your website they won't see anything but an error message. If a web site is hosted by Powweb, people should be able to see it 99.9% of the time.

Here's a web host vocabulary test. Try to type the letter of the correct definition into the box on the left of each word.

server A. the amount of information your hosting company is willing to send to people who want to see your site.
bandwidth/transfer B. e-mail
POP3/SMTP C. the amount of information you can store on the internet
web space D. a computer that sends the information for your web pages to other computers
uptime E. the amount of time your web site can not be viewed on the internet.
downtime F. the amount of time your site can be viewed online.

I hope that this is enough to get you started. Try talking about your web site or your web hosting company on the ESL go technology forum.
