I love New York, but it's too expensive to be my top choice. If you live in Manhattan, you're going to spend a lot of money. If you don't live in Manhattan, you're going to spend time, money, and energy trying to get there. Of course, once you're there you'll be amazed. I can't really describe Manhattan; it's just awesome.
Public transportation is good but not cheap. Food is good but not cheap. Housing is expensive. Entertainment is great but rarely cheap. You can find free cultural events, however. For example, you might join the thousands of New Yorkers who bring a few friends, a blanket, and some wine to Central Park when the New York Philharmonic plays there each summer. Free.
