Chicago
Overview:
+ Great museums, great music, great food, diverse people, excitement.
- Very expensive.
Chicago has a lot of big fans and for good reason. It's a great city for culture with some excellent museums and lots of sports teams: 2 MLB teams, the NFL Chicago bears, the Chicago BUlls (of Michael Jordan fame), and the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL. Plus Chicago is an attractive city, thanks in part to being on Lake Michigan.
Chicago, the Windy City, is pretty diverse with a few areas that various ethnic groups tend to concentrate in. You've got an area for southeast Asians, an area for Koreans, another for Chinese, one for Puerto Ricans, etc. You've got Little Italy, Andersonville (Swedish), and Pilsen (German).
The Chicago Reader is a free weekly newspaper with a good selection of apartment listings. If you come only for the summer try the University of Chicago's International House ($10/day). Public transportation is excellent so there's little need for a car in the city. The normal fare is $2.00.
